One question that comes to mind when a character’s goal is not to have sex with someone (a goal that, of course, they never achieve if we do our job right!) is: What do I fear I will reveal (about myself, my life, etc)through intimacy with this person? This can be a good question to help explore a character’s fears or motivation.

These are really good questions, especially “What’s the worst thing you think you might need?” — I keep coming back to that one, and pondering how I can dig deeper with my own characters.
