Strange Fruit Contest
I’m sincerely thankful to all the experienced authors on the internet who take the time to pay it forward. Who write helpful, entertaining blog posts. Hey, after blogging for years now, I know it’s not easy to stay interesting, informative, and positive day after day.
One blog on my daily read is Lynn Viehl, aka PBW.
For a chance to win a copy of The New Writer’s Handbook 2007 containing her article Strange Fruit, simply comment on this entry about someone who’s helped you in some way, who provided an encouraging word when you needed it, or shared a bit of knowledge that resonated with you. This contest is open to anyone on the planet commenting by Friday, August 3rd, midnight CST, even if you won something from me before.
I typically draw the winners on Sat, but Middle Monster is having her tonsils out this weekend. We just found out yesterday. So I’ll extend the drawing period to sometime on Sunday when she’ll hopefully feel up to helping me draw a name out of the hat.
Edited: Don’t forget to write a PBWism!

Oh no! Poor MM! I hope she does alright.
As noted on the bio page of my blog, PBW, Holly Lisle, and Tamara Siler Jones all really pushed me to take myself seriously as a writer, so they get first dibs on the Inspired list, but I’ve added you, Alison Kent, and Rosina Lippi for helping me sustain their inspiration.
Pretty much everyone on my blogroll is there because they could fit the list in some way, but you six especially.

Drop my name in the hat because you and Anna Black are both my mentors and my inspiration. The way you two continue to write amazing prose while suffering Evil Day Life just amazes me. Here I am scrabbling about on the face of the Earth with hardly a care in the world, when it comes right down to it, and I whine all the time about not having time to write.
But you two? Holy cow. You have everything in the world going on, and you still manage to kick my writing butt! And dole out encouragement and affection at the same time. Amazing, you guys. And so truly appreciated.
Love you both!

I would have to say my biggest mentor has been Holly Lisle. When she was still active on the Forward Motion website and offering her Breakout Novel writing class, I was fortunate enough to be one of the handful of people she selected. Although our class was cut short due to some unforeseen Real Life obligations, she was an excellent instructor. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I respect her for taking the time out of her busy schedule to help a bunch of wannabes.
I would also have to say that Sheila (aka PBW) is a source of inspiration. Her frank assessment of the publishing world and what it takes to be a writer have helped me in more ways than one. The fantasy I aspired to has been replaced with more realistic expectations.
I also have a couple of good friends, ladies I met through Forward Motion, who have been tremedously helpful and encouraging. Tam, Gail, and I have shared many hours online, mostly in chatrooms or Instant Messaging. They keep me going, and I can’t thank them enough!
Last but not least, this blog. Knowing you have to deal with the evil day job, three children, and all the responsibilities of being an employee, mother, and wife remind me that if I want this enough, I will find a way to make it happen. So, here’s an official “thank you!”.

I would have to say Lynn (aka), Holly, you, and everybody in the Friday Snippet Gang, for making me want to be a better writer (and get published *g*). Hope MM feels better soon.

Strange Fruit?
That’s a song, innit?

Bless you, guys! *blush* I’m so honored to be listed with such great company. MM is fine until she starts thinking about it, and then her tummy hurts and she gets “nervous” as she tells me.

They say turnabout is fair play, so I’m going to say you, Joely, and Gutterball have been such a great help to me. You’ve both lifted my spirits at time when I though I couldn’t see the tunnel much less the light at the end of it! I’m so lucky to have met both of you, at least in cyberspace, as we have yet to meet in person. So, thanks, again for being great writing pals and good, great, generous friends.

Can I echo the ?strange fruit?
For me it was NaNoWriMo. That was my Forward Motion, I guess. Now…I lurk way too many places, trying to glean.

. . . someone who’s helped you in some way, who provided an encouraging word when you needed it, or shared a bit of knowledge that resonated with you.
Can I pick three?
There have been many, including “real life” friends who’ve proof read and encouraged along the way. But three in particular are (1) Janie, for her professional and technical guidance; (2) you, Joely, for the determination you show in your posts — it’s inspiring; and (3) Linda K. Pierce, partner in crime, who I met as a Goblin Sister [a few of you will get that…] and who continues to pump me up when I’m most deflated.
Good luck to all!

I’ll drop my name in the hat - and so…I would also say Holly Lisle has a source of great advice for the longest. I read up on her articles about worldbuilding, revision, characters - again and again before I got into blogging. Forward Motion still helps with inspiration and motivation. Hope the tonsils-removal goes well. Later.

in spite of all the inspiration and encouragement I’ve gotten from the last three years of mostly lurking on writer’s sites, I must nominate my niece who read one of my Faye stories a year ago and went gaga over it. she said something like: Oh my god, I can’t believe i know the person who wrote this.
without that reaction, followed by her steady pressure in the year since i may never have found the motivation to face the daunting task of reassembling from memory the info about this very complex story world once contained in hundreds of pages of notes and drafts that were lost in a move in 2001. because of her encouragement, i was ready to take the plunge when the Seventy days of Sweat challenge came along.
I’m going to start posting instalments of the story she read in Friday Snippets next week. it is the second of the only two completed stories from this story world. i posted the last instalment of the first story in this week’s Friday Snippet
