Thursday Thirteen (TT#49)

Lynn Viehl’s Evermore releases on 1/2/2008. I was ecstatic to win an Advanced Reader’s Copy a few months ago and I loved it. I even wrote a poem about it. Hopefully after reading why I love it so much, you’ll fall in love with the Darkyn series, too! 1. Evermore is the 5th book in the Darkyn series. 2. The “Kyn” are a kind of vampire created by a virus during the Middle Ages and the Crusades. 3. I first learned about this series (also my first introduction to Lynn’s books) when I won an ARC of the first book, If Angels Burn. Once I read about Alexandra Keller and Michael Cyprien, I was hooked! 4. The series is rather unusual in the romance genre because Alexandra and Michael are key characters who continue to interact in the overall story arc. 5. However, each new book in the series does include a separate romance couple and centers on their relationship, while gradually moving the whole story forward. It’s not really a series you want to jump in the middle of (since the key characters return with more than cameo appearances), but each book (and each romance) has its own resolution. 6. Another unique twist in this series: some humans are the “real” monsters. The Brethren are a secret group of Catholic priests opposing the Kyn who have committed horrible acts of torture in their quest to destroy the Kyn. 7. Alexandra is a reconstructive surgeon (very cool setup with Michael in the first book) and I love the medical elements of her research as she searches for a cure for the Kyn. 8. Jayr, the heroine of Evermore, sacrificed her mortal life centuries ago to save Byrne, a Scottish laird dying on the battlefield. 9. Jayr becomes the only female seneschal, sworn to protect Lord Byrne with her life. 10. She has loved him for centuries, but she takes her duty to him and the jardin, his people, very, very seriously. 11. She only admits her love for Byrne in poetry. 12. She protects him, serves him, helps him in every way possible, burning for his touch, his love, but is unable to act. 13. Robin of Locksley, Robin Hood, is also one of the Darkyn and will have his own untitled book coming soon! As I said above, I love this series and will be giving away a copy of Evermore (maybe the whole series if I can swing it! in January. I’m also giving away a $25 gift certificate this week (details). I won’t include anybody posting on this entry; if you want to be entered in the giveaway, please comment on any other entry this week (I don’t want to “spam” Thursday Thirteeners!) |

Yep, sounds like I need to start at the beginning, then. One of these days, she says, eyeing the stack of books to her left that are threatening to overrun the office… *sigh*

Lynn Viehl is onE of my favorite authors and her Darkyn series is on my ultimate must read list. If Angels Burn was brilliant. Dark, dark and more dark and I loved every word of it, including the dedication.
December 20th, 2007 at 7:01 am
Oooh, sounds great! I really need to get caught up on this series!
December 20th, 2007 at 8:34 am
LOVED this book as well. Funny exchange at BN last night:
Me: I’d like to reserve Evermore.
Seller: *evil grin* We have that in the store already. But of course you’ll have to wait till January.
Me: *coolly* Oh, good thing I read it in September, then. I just want it in book form rather than the galley that Ms. Viehl sent me.
Seller: *face drops* Ah.
And, I’m eating my words; I said Dark Need was my favorite, but then I read Night Lost, and that is now my favorite.

A couple of weeks before one of my books is published, I get this small, hard knot in my stomach. It’s the oh-Lord-there’s-no-turning-back writer knot. I try to be cheerful and nonchalant about new releases, but the knot is there, and it knows I’m faking, and it delights in all the negative thoughts that pop into my head. What will happen once my story is out there in the world? The knot tells me, constantly: Utter Disaster.
This time around I can feel the knot unraveling now, even though I still have a couple of weeks to suffer. This is directly due to you and your kind words for Evermore, as well as all the other writers and readers who have offered their generous support.
There simply isn’t a better Christmas present than this. Thank you.
