Good Riddance to May

Not only did I turn another year older, but my sister’s town was devastated by a tornado and my laptop was busted.  Plus I’ve had a major project in progress at the Evil Day Job, which was running late, stressing me out.  My husband is unemployed for the second time this year, and the kids got out of school.

SHOOT ME NOW.

MayNoWriMo is a bust.

Yet, there’s several rays of sunshine in this May of gloom.  I finally finished the pyramid sacrifice scene in The Bloodgate Warrior!  It only too me all stinking month to finish the scene…Sigh.  However, it’s a killer scene, one I’m very pleased to finish.  Now I have the big showdown ahead.  I plan to continue getting up D&E as much as possible, because with summer activities driving me nuts, I won’t have time at night to write.

I also finished a major component of the EDJ project today.  Woot!  Still have a lot to do, but the part that was like an albatross around my neck is finally DONE.  I collapsed in a huge heap Friday after working late, spent the weekend like a slug watching movies and cross-stitching, and finished up the last of my tasks today as I promised.  Whew.

Mythos, Joplin Update

I noticed quite a few hits to my blog from people looking to see if Mythos survived the tornado.  Damon, superstar waiter at Mythos (ask for him, he’s great), says on Facebook that the restaurant is fine.  South of Mythos…not so good.  George (the owner) was inside Wal-Mart when the storm hit, but he’s okay, just banged up a bit.

I’ve heard from Molly tonight — they’re all buckled down and braced for another round of weather.  Please pray that Joplin is spared any further damaging weather!

Joplin Tornado

I’ve talked about my Beloved Sister too many times to count here.   Molly lives in the Joplin, MO, area which was devastated by a massive EF4 tornado last night, but she’s fine.  Everyone I personally know in Joplin — including George, the owner of Mythos (which I’ve also raved about several times!), and our favorite waiter, Damon — are also okay.  I don’t know about their homes but we’ve connected with them on Facebook.

We didn’t even know about the storm until my Dad called and said Joplin had been hit, but he’d already talked to Molly and she was okay.  He warned us to get home as quickly as possible because the storm was headed right for us.  We hit Walgreens quickly and before we could get home, the tornado sirens started.

If I’d known at the time how bad Joplin had been hit, I might have been even more worried.  The kids and dogs hung out in the basement while we tracked the storm on the news.  I saw the storm passing a good ten miles south of us, so I wasn’t too worried.

Then the pictures from Joplin started coming in….

Sobs.  It’s so hard to realize that we were just there Saturday.  We drove down Rangeline Road and passed that Wal-Mart that is now just a pile of rubble.  As far as I know, Mythos is still there, but the other side of Rangeline is a tangled mass of trashed cars and destroyed buildings.  Rangeline, a major commercial road, is completely impassible.

I’m just so thankful that everyone we know and love are safe, but it’s going to take a long, long time for the area to recover.  Molly’s office building is completely gone.  The major hospital in Joplin, evacuated.  The high school, gone.  Over 2000 buildings damaged or completely destroyed.  If you’d like to help, this local website has details.

Please keep Joplin in your thoughts and prayers!

Slacker

Sorry for my blog silence this month.  I just haven’t had much mojo, in blogging or in writing.  I’m still trudging along in The Bloodgate Warrior, specifically, the pyramid sacrifice scene.  Sex scenes can be really sloooow going, so I’m trying to be patient with a couple hundred words a day.  The backup laptop can’t handle more than one thing open at a time — just not enough RAM.  At least I can’t play any games to distract me!

I’m expecting the repair on my main laptop to run about $250.  I hope to get it next week, but it might run into the first week of June.  I’m trying to be patient.

We had a tagging party for all the Carina Press releases.  We all went out to Amazon and “liked” and “tagged” as many releases as possible.  It was fun, and a great chance to see all the gorgeous covers.  Anybody want to do this for some other publisher?  If you’re a writer and have a book out, remind me in comments and we can exchange “tags!”

I’m turning another year older this weekend (assuming the rapture doesn’t happen!!) so what would you like to have me do on the blog to celebrate?  A free book?  A sneak peek of something?  If you have a burning secret desire for something, let me know.  We’re planning another trip to Mythos — the monsters’ present to me — and I’ve asked for pens, paper, notebooks, and books.  My very favorite things!  Point me to the stationary or office supplies aisle and I’m one happy camper!

The Backup Laptop Saga

After spending the entire weekend cleaning, defragging, scanning, etc. I finally have my original writing laptop up and running.

Seriously, what a headache.  I’ve had constant Norton virus protection on this device, but it still managed to pick up a trojan somewhere between the kids hitting Webkinz and Disney.  I knew something bad was going on as soon as I took it back from the monsters.  It was just too slow.  Norton couldn’t/hadn’t found this virus, but thankfully McAfee Stinger nailed it.  I un-installed tons of games and old programs, but defrags and scans still took HOURS.  AdAware took almost 6 hours.  What the heck?!?

I did some googling and finally realized that Microsoft never cleans up after itself.  Duh, silly of me to think that Windows would clean up previous updates.  Plus, this laptop is using Vista, which no one liked.  Four years of Windows Updates and restore points were bogging the poor old thing down.  I ran a registry cleaner first, then cleaned out all those old updates, then deleted all but my last clean restore point.  Freeing well over 20 gig of space!

The laptop is running much better now.  Hopefully the next virus scan won’t take 6 hours, either.

Oh, and I managed 366 words on The Bloodgate Warrior.  New file, of course, since my last file didn’t get backed up.  Even if I lose it, it’s only a couple of hundred words and I was not real happy with that day’s work anyway.  May is half gone — I really need to step it up or I’ll never get anywhere close to meeting all my MayNoWriMo goals!

P.S. More monster woes.  Middle Monster broke her bed while stripping off her sheets for laundry day.  It was a cheap put-together platform bed I bought a couple of years ago off Wal-Mart, and it’s been through several moves.  She stepped on the platform in the wrong place and cracked the particle board base.  So we spent a couple of hours bunk-bed shopping yesterday too.  More unexpected expenses but at least it’ll free up some nice space in their room.  And no particle board — this one is made out of metal!  Hopefully it’s Middle proofed for at least a few years….

MayNoWriMo Disasters

May has not been a nice month so far.  I’ve got a lot going on the personal front, which has a disastrous effect on my writing productivity.  Combine that with Evil Day Job stress…and…

Last night, Princess Monster stepped on my writing laptop and busted the screen (if not more).  With everything going on, I admit, I sobbed.  Yeah, it’s just a computer.  It was an accident.  I lost a couple of hundred words for the day, but I can get that back.  It’s just the point, you know?  Out of three computers she could have trashed, she had to bust my newest, dedicated writing device.

Of course I still have little Betsy, the adorable pink netbook, but she’s hard to write on for very long.  The keyboard is just too small.  Great for the car or for writing bursts when I don’t want to be distracted by computer games, etc.  but my hands are bad enough that I can’t deal with the tiny keyboard for long.

I have my oldest writing laptop, a 4 year old Toshiba with Windows Vista on it.  I’d given it to the kids and it’s loaded with games and God only knows what kind of crap they’ve picked up on the internet.  It’s slower than molasses.  But it does have Word and my hands fit on the keyboard better.  I’ve spent the day cleaning it up, deleting the games (sorry kids), running virus checks, defragging, etc.  Hopefully I’ll be back in commission tomorrow or Monday at the latest.

Maybe the break will do me some good mentally and I’ll be in a better mood by then too.  At least until I get the bill for fixing my laptop.

Ironically, this poor old Toshiba also bears some monster damage.  My dad bought it for my birthday four years ago.  I was sitting outside writing while the kids rode their bikes in the driveway.  I hadn’t even had it a month yet and Middle Monster ran into my chair and I spilled coffee all over the keyboard.  Replacing the keyboard was only $140 or so.  I have no idea how much the screen will cost.

Pepper’s Progress

When our dog, Pepper, first dislocated his hip, I googled for advice and stories about how often dogs could actually recover from this injury without surgery.  The doctor told me that most dogs had a 50-50 chance of recovery without surgery.  For Pepper, he gave 60-40 because of his small size and temperment.

I was sick at the thought of another dislocation, because surgery is $$$$.  I was afraid we’d have to put him down.  *sobs*

Unfortunately, there didn’t seem to be a lot of positive stories, so I felt it was important to share about Pepper’s recovery.  The vet said three weeks of confinement, preferably in a crate.  Absolutely no stairs (we live in a split-level) and as little activity as possible for three weeks.  Because of his small size, they couldn’t even put his injured leg in a sling to keep it tight against his body (his leg just came right out of it).

At first, it seemed impossible.  We’ve never crated Pepper and I knew he’d hate it.  It’s a testament to how much pain he was in that he didn’t mind it the first few days.  He even voluntarily crawled inside to lie on his king-sized pillow, sheet, and blankie.

The first day he was pretty woozie from getting put under.  All he did was lie around.  He wouldn’t eat or drink, so I was pretty worried about him.  The only way I could get his pain and anti-inflamatory meds down him was to wrap them in deli turkey.  So I bought him another pack!  Taking him out to go potty was a sad affair (he’s a boy – hiking one hind leg was impossible with his other dislocated).  He slept all night without a peep, and the next morning guzzled water.

Over the weekend, he still didn’t have much appetite, so I kept feeding him turkey.  Keeping him confined was simple — he didn’t want to go or do anything.  The first day or two, he walked on his own but his backend swayed a lot, as if he couldn’t stabilize himself.  I’m sure it’s because all those ligaments were torn.  The only time I allowed him to walk at all was in the yard to potty, and as soon as he was done, I scooped him up and carried him back inside.

On the weekdays, I carried him down to my office and kept him penned there all day with his own water and food bowl.  After a few days, he started to eat his own food again and no longer wanted to be in his crate.  Princess wanted him in her room (she felt really badly that he’d been hurt), so she kept him in his crate at night in her room.  In the second week, he started waking her up at night, wanting out of his crate.  I finally told her to just let him sleep out in her room.  Her bed is very low so I didn’t have to worry about him jumping up and down too much and he was much happier.

Going into the third week, I can tell he’s much better.  He’s gotten away from me a few times and trotted up and down the stairs before I could catch up with him.  He’s eating and peeing normally.  He walks without pain.  He can jump up and put his front paws on the edge of my chair when he wants me to pick him up, with all his weight on his two back legs.  Obviously, it’s been much more challenging to keep him from activity.  Today, he even showed interest in playing ball with our other highly active dog (if KC had dislocated her hip, it’d be impossible to keep her stationary — she’s a very active, high maintenance dog).

I think his age (10 years old) and temperment played a huge part in his ability to recover so far.  He’s definitely a “lap” dog and never more happy than just sleeping on my lap.  Thursday will be the end of his confinement.  I’ll be so happy not to have to carry him up and down the stairs any longer!  He’s only 15 pounds, but I know that’s how I injured my back.

*knocks on wood*  Hopefully he’s well on the mend and his hip won’t pop out again!  According to my research, he’ll likely have arthritis in his hip, but so far his mobility doesn’t seem to be affected at all.

Good News Monday

Sorry I was delayed today!  It was definitely Monday, with a hefty to-do list for the Evil Day Job that consumed all my attention all day.  Monday might be almost over but we can always use good news!

  • I did my first formal presentation for the Evil Day Job even though I telecommute from Missouri!  No one could see me, but they could hear me and I ran the slide show from my little home office, which required me to use PowerPoint for the first time.
  • I’ve lost 18 pounds now!
  • Our dog, Pepper, got hurt Thursday night when Princess took him to bed.  He landed wrong and dislocated his rear left hip!  Ouch!  It was a horrible night at the Emergency Vet Clinic, but the GOOD NEWS  is that he’s doing better and his hip has stayed in place.  (If it doesn’t, he’ll require very expensive surgery.)
  • A great review for Lady Doctor Wyre!
  • A giveaway to help Ex Libris celebrate its blogversary!
  • Celebrated MIL and FIL’s wedding anniversary this weekend – 53 years!  The whole family had a great lunch at Red Lobster and then everyone congregated here for coffee.
  • Daddy Bob B (Papa, my Dad) came down Sunday and brought Princess her POOP.  She’s doing a science project to compare various farm animal poop to Miracle Grow fertilizer.  Should be a fun spring!

What’s your good news?

Good News Monday

I don’t have a lot of writing news to share but I’m not going to beat myself up about that.  When I’m exercising or dieting well, it always takes away some of my brain power for the writing.  I guess I’m concentrating too hard on one to be very productive on the other.  But I’m hoping that as time goes by, I’ll settle better into the habits and be able to re-energize the writing, because I’ll obviously feel much better!  That’s the hope/plan at least.

So for good news today:

  • I’ve lost 16 pounds as of this morning!
  • That Man got a new job!  (I mentioned on Twitter/Facebook that his hours had been cut drastically right before Christmas and he’s been looking ever since.)  New hours, etc. will take us some time to get used to.  I’ll be on kid-duty in the afternoon, picking up kids from after-school activities, etc. but he’ll be able to take Princess to school in the mornings on his way and will be home for dinner each night.
  • I dragged out my lap frame and HDF silks to return to work on Autumn at Hawk Run Hollow.  I haven’t stitched since October, and every time I “return” to stitching, I’m amazed at how much I love doing it again.  I may not be able to stick with this project for long (because it’s so large and I’d like to FINISH something!) but for now, I’m working on the first square block on the left with the big house.  (I outlined the top but didn’t do it all – long story.  I’d finished that block before on different linen but ended up hating it, so I started over again and wanted to do new colors!)  When I finish that block, I’ll take a picture!

What’s your good news today?

Good News Monday

Did you know that today is supposed to be one of the most depressing days of theyear? We did have a pretty sad weekend, and I’m working at the Evil Day Job today even though everyone else in my family is off, so I decided to have a POSITIVE post.

My good news for today and this month:

1. I’ve lost 8 pounds so far this month.

2. I made a significant breakthrough in my understanding about the direction I want to go with my writing for the next several years.

3. I’ve mapped out my writing plan for the next three months and it’s doable (vs. insane, which I sadly tend to attempt).

4. I’ve returned to modest exercise this month and I’ve been eating more natural, real, whole foods (see #1).

5. Doing the dishes (see #4 – requires lots of cooking from scratch) hasn’t killed me yet.

6. The monsters haven’t had a snow day yet (although they are home today – I hear them thumping around under That Man’s watch).

7. To earn money for DSis, the monsters cleaned the entire garage this weekend. All I have to do is go through the “Mom” pile (which
I haven’t seen yet, so I can call this a positive).

8. Other than a mild cold, none of us have been ill this winter (possibly linked to #4).

9. I’ve been reading more since I got a Kindle for Christmas.

10. I’ve made the first sale of 2011!

I’ve known for over a week but I’m always a little neurotic that they’ll change their mind before I get the contract. 😉 But I really need the good news and you might too! So I’m happy to say that Golden — an erotic novella loosely based on Imperial China — will be coming soon from Carina Press!

Come on, share some good news! Don’t let this be a “Blue Monday.”
