Bad Blogger

Sorry for my absence.  I guess the funeral really took it out of me.

On the drive up, we passed through our old home town and took the “usual” route to Sedalia that I drove the summer between my junior and senior year in high school when I attended summer college.  It was weird to see how much was still the same, even after 20 years.  We even timed the trip so we could have dinner at our old family favorite, El Sambre.  That was *the* place to eat when we were kids, and I swear, it tasted and looked exactly the same as I remember.  Food was wonderful.

I made three passes through the copy edits for Dear Sir, I’m Yours on the drive.  Did you know I used “damn” on average once every four pages?  *dies*

I even found the place where Mom’s car blew up on me and left me stranded alongside the road for three hours.  A farmer drove by and took me up to his house so I could call for help (this was the dark ages before cell phones).

In Marshall, we met up with all of That Man’s family for family night.  We haven’t seen most of his cousins since the last funeral (his uncle who passed away from cancer about 3-4 years ago).  Middle Monster made a new friend — That Man’s aunt who has horses.  She’s already begging us to take her to the family farm so she can meet the horses.

We had a late night and a very early, stressful morning, but it was a lovely sunny spring day.  The service was nice, Grandma looked really good.  She was 90 years old with many great and great-great grandchildren present.  Afterwards, we went to a little country church (that Grandma and Grandpa had attended before their health prevented it) for an old-time potluck spread.

Then the long drive home.  I slept most of the way and got a terrible crick in my neck.  I tried to read, but I just couldn’t stay awake.  I’ve been sort of out of it since, in “survive until Friday” mode.  However, this weekend isn’t going to be all sunshine and bunnies.  In fact, we plan to do some serious cleaning.  The monsters have agreed to clean and organize the basement, as well as give away a bunch of toys (to make room for new ones, obviously).  Not their idea of cleaning, which means pick up everything — dirty clothes, books, shoes, toys — and shove it into a container; Mom will be supervising.  As their reward, we plan to take them to the Hannah Montana movie.

It’s going to be a really, really long day.

In Memory

Grandma K — That Man’s grandmother — has always been “Grandma in the Hospital” to Littlest Monster because as long as she can remember, Grandma K has been in the nursing home.  Well, she’s not in the hospital any longer; she’s dancing in heaven with Grandpa K and her son who passed away a few years ago from cancer.  We’ll be traveling Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday to attend the funeral.

“May the thunder of the Great Wind Stallion’s hooves carry you home to His Clouds.”  Kae’Shaman touched the brand to the wood, and the flames leapt eagerly.  “There your hooves never tire; your body never falters.  You will gallop across the sky at Vulkar’s side, and we who remain shall hear your thunder, and remember.”        ~ The Road to Shanhasson

Easter Miscellany

It’s already been a crazy weekend.

Papa from Mexico (my Dad) called to say he’d like to come down tomorrow, which is always a treat, so we decided to do some kind of Easter “dinner.”  I’m still sick of ham–overdosed from Christmas–so we decided to do prime rib.  Now That Man does a mighty mean prime rib, and once news got out, our guest list grew.  We always love to have company, but the house was a pit and those rib roasts aren’t exactly cheap.  We cleaned Friday night and headed out for loads of food shopping today.

Finally, after months of checking, I found a Wii-Fit at our local Wal-Mart.  I haven’t tried it yet, but Princess Monster is loving it.  (So if I never even step on it, I’ll still count it a victory.)  I stocked up on everything for Potato Salad and Spinach Salad, as well as some veggies I think I’ll roast.  I also bought a huge tub of strawberries so I’m not so tempted by whatever dessert Aunt BB brings.

We’d just got home from numerous stops all over town to hear that Grandma K in the Hospital (the monsters’ Great Grandmother, who’s been in the nursing home pretty much all of Littlest Monster’s life, so that’s what she calls her) is doing very poorly.  Hospice doesn’t think she’ll make it through the weekend.  So That Man decided to make a quick trip over “just in case” and Middle Monster wanted to go with him.  The other two monsters and I stayed home (we didn’t think all of us needed to cram in there if she’s truly not doing that well, and we did see her just a week or two ago).  They cleaned the pit of their room while I started some basic preparations for tomorrow.

We still have Easter eggs to dye, potatoes to peel, etc. but we’ll take care of all that tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the monsters are frantically looking for their Easter baskets.  When Princess Monster was born, we lived in MN and since I worked in the home office, I was exposed to all sorts of parties, everything from Pampered Chef to Tupperware to Longaberger baskets, and yes, I bought a special basket for her first Easter.  Of course, I had to do the same for the other two monsters.  So they have these fantastic, extremely expensive baskets that they get out once a year…..and they can’t find them.  We moved last summer and I have no idea where they are.

[Updated:  the baskets have been found!  Whew]

As for writing, I’ve been wracking (haha, inside story joke) my brain, trying to come up with a really peppy hook for the Maya fantasy.  I have the general concept of the world/series down to two words — but the actual story, heroine, etc. is causing me a huge headache.  I also started reading Clockwork Heart, no verdict yet, and I played a bunch of computer games, everything from Farm Craft to Curse of the Pharaoh.  My biggest complaint lately has been not enough worlds/levels — they’re over too fast!

Oh, and remember when Deena challenged me ages ago to write a zombie romance?  I’ve got a near-finished copy of the freakishly awesome anthology in my hot little hands–BUMP IN THE NIGHT from Drollerie Press.  My short story, “Broken Angel:  A Zombie Love Story” is included.  Watch for it to release next week!

So what are your plans for Easter?

Weekend Mini-Vacation

Since the monsters are on spring break, we decided to take today off from our Evil Day Jobs and plan a little mini vacation for them.  They *love* to spend the night in a hotel, and we haven’t gone anywhere since the urgent St. Louis trip last year when FIL was hospitalized.  Originally, we planned to drive back to St. Louis and see Grant’s Farm, but two things made us change our mind:

  • Possibility of 6 (or more!) inches of freakish snow tomorrow, with a four-hour drive home the next day!
  • Grant’s Farm is closed until April 18th.

So we decided to go to Branson instead.  It’s only 30-40 min. away, so if the weather gets bad, we can get home without too much difficulty.  We don’t go to Branson often because of horrendous tourist traffic and it’s EXPENSIVE.  However, this is still the off season, so we found a nice condo-style hotel with an indoor pool just off the strip that was pretty reasonable.  We’re going to drive around the lake (free), find a beach so the kids can get close to the water (free), maybe go see the fish hatcheries (I think that’s free too), etc.  I doubt we’ll do any shows, because I’m guessing that would cost closer to $100 for a family of 5.  Yes, the prices are ridiculous.

Mostly, we’re going for the nice hotel and pool.

We’re leaving sometime today (got to sleep in a bit and bum around the house since we didn’t have a four hour drive!).  The only thing I’ve packed?

My reward books.   I’m taking:

  • Desire Unchained by Larissa Ione
  • New Blood by Gail Dayton
  • Clockwork Heart by Dru Pagliassotti

I think that should get me through the weekend.  Although I might take one more just to be safe.  I don’t read…I devour.

Revision Xibalba

Yes, I’m still slowly grinding away on the project that will not end.  I lost Friday night thanks to a lovely visit with Aunt BB and Uncle J — it’s always nice to see them.  Just hard on my writing schedule.  Saturday we had 3 hours in the car, and I actually got quite a bit done, but then I slept in really late on Sunday and visited with my Beloved Sis all afternoon.  We had a blast, baked cookies, made a Cherry-Diet-Coke Chocolate Cake, and realized we have exactly the same black Sketchers in the exact same size…but we didn’t write!

I didn’t get up quite as early as I needed today, but I finally managed to finish up one section this morning and another (short) one tonight.  NSR is just shy of 90K (88,965).  According to my spreadsheet, I only have 5-6 sections, depending on how the resolution of two major story threads ends up.  That’s it!  Yet it feels like miles and miles away.

We’re hoping to do a mini-vacation trip for the monsters this weekend (they’re on Spring Break), so it would be most excellent if I could finish the revision and reward myself with the books I’ve been promising myself on the drive to St. Louis.  I also have first-pass edits to complete on Dear Sir, I’m Yours, so that might be wishful thinking to get both of them done before Friday.

We’ll see what I can manage.

Snippet:

In the center, a black stone rose up from the floor, sticky and wet.  A living, beating heart oozing fresh blood sat on top of the stone.

One Death gestured grandly.  “Behold the caged heart, some of our greatest magic.  Only the heart of a king can last so long, except possibly…”  His head turned slowly, his glowing red eyes latching on to her.  “A cursed priest’s who cannot die.”

She shuddered at the thought of Ruin’s heart ripped from his chest, magicked into beating for the Xibalban Lords’ pleasure.  They must gain a great deal of power from the constant beating of the heart and its fresh flow of blood.

“The greatest wonder is that we need do nothing to keep it beating.  Only the king’s great emotion keeps his heart caged and alive:  his love, hatred, and fierce desire for revenge.  Ah, such sweet, delicious emotions.  I’d forgotten what human emotion felt like until he came into our hands.  He’s given us much to savor.”

My New Teapot

I’m so excited!  I ordered the perfect teapot off Amazon yesterday.  Since I broke my other one, I made a joke to That Man about getting a cast iron one.  To my delight, they do make cast iron teapots and they weren’t that much more expensive.  The name of this one caught my eye first:  Cast-Iron Mythology Teapot.  It’s red, black, and has a dragon on it.  Is that perfect for me or what?

I also ordered a cast-iron cup that sort of matches.  It doesn’t have a dragon but it looks to be the same red.  It didn’t qualify for Prime shipping, so I only ordered one, but I’d love to have a four-set of these someday.

If nothing else, I can get a workout by hefting my cup a few times while brainstorming my sticky plot mess!

I feel like I should now broaden my tea experience.  I keep English Breakfast in stock from Harney & Sons, as well as a few other store-bought tea bags like Vanilla Chai and Jasmine.  What’s your favorite tea and where do you get it?

Still sick but somewhat better.  Watch for Revision Xibalba posts today — I would love to finish another couple of new sections so I can be clear to revise tomorrow and Tuesday.

Where did the weekend go?

Our first non-basketball weekend disappeared in the blink of an eye.  I didn’t get much of anything done that I’d hoped.

Friday night, I bought some plastic window-box containers, Miracle Grow potting soil, and lettuce seeds.  Yes, I’m going to try to grow things again this year — this time in containers instead of hay bales.  However, we were too busy to get anything planted, so I need to do it tonight.  This is the perfect time to plant lettuce, before it gets too warm!  I’m going to try tomatoes and zucchini in containers, too, but can’t plant them until May or so.

Sat. we slept in (bliss!) and then made a big pancake and bacon breakfast.  After catching up on all the dishes, (a theme for the weekend) I escaped the house ALONE to go on my first “Artist’s Date” ala Julia Cameron.  I went to a small local Art Show and Book Swap.  Other than work (which is here at the house because I telecommute), I’m ashamed to say it’s the first time I’ve been anywhere alone since I took off all that time in Nov.  That Man tried to stick me with a kid on the way out, but I managed to escape, although most of the books I bought were for them, including the much beloved “It’s Not Easy Being a Bunny”, about PJ Funnybunny.  That used to be Princess Monster’s favorite book — to the point that we sheepishly hid it for awhile because we were sick of reading it.  It was damaged in a basement flood, so I was glad to find a copy of it again.

Then I rushed off to Wal-Mart and home to begin cooking for an impromptu get-together with Aunt BB and Uncle J.  We had brisket (that I couldn’t get done — it was HUGE!), potato salad, salad, and mixed roasted veggies.  More dishes.

Sunday was the time change, but we managed to crawl out of bed in the dark and get off to church.  Papa surprised us with a trip down and met us for lunch at Macaroni Grill.  He watched Middle Monster play her new horse game on the Wii for hours while we visited.  Dinner was leftover brisket (finally done–but not much was left!), more roasted veggies, leftover salad and potato salad.  The two littlest monsters had hotdogs instead of meat — Middle Monster was devastated when she found out that my “barbeque sandwiches” weren’t those formed rib sandwiches but “real” meat.  She loooooves McRib sandwiches!

More dishes, then baths, while That Man worked on the laundry.  Before I knew it, it was time to get the monsters in bed and I’d accomplished very little writing, or so I thought.  I did manage to get the blurb doc back to Angie for Dear Sir, and I’ve gotten through nearly 150 pages of edits on Road.  The first chapter took the most work — as always.  Once I got through it, the rest has been easier.  I’m hoping to finish the rest of the edits today, look them over the next day or two, and then get them back to Deena.

Meanwhile, I also need to polish The Shadowed Blood and get it up for E-Book Week.  I’m going to include a sneak peek of the first chapter or two in Road, so stay tuned!

Nothing on Revision Xibalba, but we did catch the end of Game Plan, a movie starring The Rock, last night, which totally inspired me to get back to NSR (since Ruin is played by The Rock).

How about you — did you have a crazy weekend?

February Recap

I need a do-over.

Other than the terrific news from Samhain, Feb. was pretty much a bust.  I didn’t finish Revision Xibalba — and I should have been able to do so.  I can’t even blame it on a new project, because I only finished one section in the new sfr project.  I was rather scattered.  I spent days brainstorming a new title for Letters, tenatively “Make Me.”  I spent days angsting about an agent.  Then poof.  I looked up and the month was gone.

So today, I cleaned my desk.  I made a consise list of what I need to do in order to complete Revision Xibalba this month.  I have some items to complete for Samhain this week, but otherwise, Revision Xibalba is my number one priority until I get editor revisions on either Road or Letters (MM).

My mood hasn’t been the greatest the past week or so.  After I turned in my “year in review” status report this past week (performance appraisal time is just around the corner), my boss at the Evil Day Job said she thought I was going to quit.  Not hardly, but reflective of how off my game I’ve been.

Oh, and I also broke my teapot.  With tea in it, of course.  And one paper towel left in the entire kitchen.  Don’t even ask about the dumb thing I did to Bethanie!

So I’ll be shopping for a new teapot — and hoping for a better month!

Where I Am

I’m going to work on the nagging (haha, not “nagging” according to Sal in the Shanhasson series) scene today in Revision Xibalba even if it kills me!  If I must admit defeat by the time I go to bed, then tomorrow, I’m skipping this scene.  I know what comes later — and it’s easy smoothing/edits not writing a brand new scene.

Kait, I don’t think I need your character therapist duties — yet.  I know this character.  The problem is I don’t know enough about the plot in this scene.  I have a general sense, but I’ve already started it in the wrong place.  This is a new sub-plot thread, and so some of this exploration is necessary for me — but doesn’t belong on page.  For whatever reason, I have a mental block about it.

Since I don’t have much to report on the writing front, I’ll note a few other things.

I’m currently reading The Magicians and Mrs. Quent by Galen Beckett thanks to this post at Fantasy Debut.  It was generally held knowledgeable among the people who know my secret writing projects that I was working on a similar story at one time or another (2007 Fast Draft which needs so much work it’s not even funny).  Magicians is a lovely story, but very very slow paced.  It’s an interesting mix of Regency mores and “new” culture of this world.  I know there are seven old Houses that supposedly controlled or knew magic but that’s about it, and I’m thru the first five chapters.

I got out several packages last Friday AT LAST!  There was great rejoicing heard all about the land as I now have packages winging their way toward WI, VA, TN and OH.  I have one more “Christmas” present to mail to friends in WI, a birthday present (from last September — shame!!) to a friend in MN, and one of my Dad’s acquaintances wants a print out of Survive My Fire.  After that, I might almost be caught up in post office duties.

I need to clean my desk.  I need to clean out the fridge.  I need to sit down and plan out some healthy meals and evaluate my schedule to make sure I’m exercising — I’ve been lax again.

By then, my writing mo-jo should be back in full swing.  That’s the plan, at least, and I’m sticking to it.

Slacker

*hangs head in shame*

I’ve been a slacker all weekend.  I opened my file (Tara_009) several times, but I just can’t get through this scene.  I’ve played a ton of computer games.  Even though we didn’t take the roadtrip to That Man’s parents’ house, I still didn’t get much of anything accomplished, other than beating several levels of Diner Dash Through Time.  This game was seriously kicking my ass.  After the first couple “easy” levels, I got seriously stuck in each new “time.”  I could not figure out the secret to the game.

Cooking Dash, which I also have on this computer, was a piece of cake compared to this one.  I love that game.  It made sense.  Serve the customers as quickly as possible, keep them happy, and don’t lose any of them.  Diner Dash had a different flavor though.  I didn’t have to rush to various prep stations — all I had to do was grab the food from Grandma and deliver it to the tables.  So why was I struggling so much?

There were a few tricks to the game that I didn’t figure out until yesterday.  I didn’t know how to use the podium, for one, which if I let Flo stand there and talk to the waiting customers long enough, they didn’t leave as quickly.  But even when I didn’t lose a single customer, I still couldn’t clear some of the levels.

It finally dawned on me last night around 10 pm.  I was being too efficient.  I was seating and cleaning tables too quickly.  Only by taking my time, deliberately letting guests stand and wait, while I let only 3-4 tables in at a time, did I finally start winning every stage.  The trick was to match up the colors in the seats as often as possible, doubling, tripling, etc. my points.

I had to make people wait in order to win.

Suddenly, I wasn’t as stressed.  (Yes, I know it’s a only a game, but I get very obsessed about such things.)  I took my time and took really good care of much fewer tables at a time and then went over and chatted with customers in the down time to keep them happy.

At one point, I looked up and it was almost 1 AM.  *dies*  I’m in the last “time” world — the futuristic one — so I almost beat the game.  Once I do, the obsession will end.  I hope.  Now that I know the tricks to winning the game, I’m sure I’ll want to go back and win each level at the expert level.

So what does all this have to do with writing?  Sometimes it’s okay to let stories wait at the podium awhile.  Sometimes it’s perfectly fine to stand and chat with them awhile before sitting them down and writing.  I can certainly do a better job with fewer stories at their seats.

And once this game is licked, I have a feeling I’ll be obsessed with finishing Revision Xibalba, because the end is in sight.  If only I can finish this current scene…
